Praetorian Guard

Role Title: Praetorian Guardsman
Reports To: The Consuls & The Senate of Vero
Primary Function: Enforcement of Vero’s Laws, Protection of the Consulate, and Security Consultation for the Island’s Leadership

 

Overview
The Praetorian Guard serves as the elite law enforcement and security arm of the Consulate, sworn to uphold the will of the Consul, the Senate, and the Pact’s leadership. Acting as both enforcers and trusted security advisors, the Guardsmen are responsible for ensuring the safety of Vero’s ruling bodies, maintaining public order, and enforcing the Vero Legal Code. They operate with unquestionable authority granted directly by the island’s highest offices and are empowered to act decisively in matters of law, and threats to the stability of the city.

As securities consultants, Praetorian Guardsmen advise the Senate and Consuls on matters of personal protection, political risk, public safety strategy, and event security, ensuring that Senate leadership decisions are made with a clear understanding of potential threats and the means to neutralize them.

 

Core Duties & Responsibilities

• Law Enforcement & Order Maintenance
   

  • Enforce the Vero Legal Code and core rules, including respect for territorial boundaries, and adherence to the social hierarchy.
     

  • Conduct investigations into inter-factional and inter-species crimes, gathering evidence, interviewing witnesses, and making arrests when required.
     

  • Carry out punishments as decreed by the Consul, from fines to execution.
     

• Security Consultation
   

  • Serve as the Senate’s and Consul’s primary advisors on security threats, law enforcement procedures, and strategic policing.
     

  • Assess vulnerabilities in leadership residences, Senate Hall, and sacred sites, recommending preventative measures.
     

  • Oversee protective details for high-ranking officials and sensitive political gatherings.
     

• Faction & Public Relations
   

  • Coordinate with faction leaders to enforce laws while respecting their internal authority.
     

  • Maintain a visible, authoritative presence to deter disorder and reinforce the island’s hierarchy.
     

  • Be aware of the differences and rights of Consul and Pact members.
     

• Special Operations
   

  • Respond to high-threat incidents such as assassination attempts, treasonous plots, and large-scale unrest.
     

  • Supervise lawful duels, ritual challenges, and sanctioned Arena trials to ensure fairness and compliance.
     

  • Guard prisoners within the Lanista’s prison complex and ensure their security until trial or punishment.
     

 

Authority & Jurisdiction
Praetorian Guardsmen operate above standard enforcers, answering only to the Consul and the Senate. They have island-wide jurisdiction to:

• Arrest any individual, regardless of faction or status, for breaches of the Legal Code.
   

• Conduct searches and seizures without warrant when public safety or leadership security is at risk.
   

• Detain and transport prisoners to holding or to the Arena for trial or punishment.
   

 

Required Qualities

• Proven loyalty to the Consul and Senate.
   

• Skilled in both martial and strategic security tactics.
   

• Capable of communicating with Factions to facilitate/determine law enforcement authority.
   

• Knowledgeable in political risk assessment and crisis response.
   

• Able to inspire respect, fear, and compliance through presence, words, and decisive action.
   

 

Roleplay Considerations

• Guardsmen are intended to be active, visible presences in public spaces, engaging in both proactive patrols and reactive incident responses.
   

• Players should balance enforcement with opportunities for dynamic, engaging RP—allowing for investigations, trials, and political intrigue.
   

• Use the securities consultant role to justify involvement in political discussions, Senate sessions, and Consul events, adding depth to law enforcement RP beyond simple arrests.
